The healthy homes standards introduce 5 minimum standards for rental homes – because we should all live in a warm, dry home.
Nearly 600,000 households rent in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
Research shows that rental properties are often in poorer condition than owner-occupied homes. It also shows a link between cold, damp and mouldy homes and bad health outcomes – especially for people with asthma and heart conditions.
By improving the quality of rental homes, we improve the health of New Zealanders who rent. Warm, dry homes are also less likely to have issues with mould or mildew damage – so improving them is a double win!
Tenants and landlords both have a role to play in raising the standard of our rental properties, keep reading to find out what you should be doing.
Raise the Standard is here to help make your rental healthier.
